His life changes when he hears a wild, true tale: a massive treasure of Ainu gold was stolen and hidden. The map to this treasure was tattooed onto the skin of 24 escaped convicts from Abashiri Prison. To find the gold, one must locate and collect these pieces of skin, effectively creating a gruesome jigsaw puzzle.

Sugimoto quickly teams up with Asirpa, a young Ainu girl and skilled hunter whose people are the rightful owners of the gold, and who seeks vengeance for the murder of her father, which is tied to the treasure. Their quest quickly turns into a frantic race against two powerful and dangerous factions: the rogue 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, led by the charismatic but unhinged Lieutenant Tsurumi, and a band of former Shinsengumi members and cunning convicts led by the legendary samurai Toshizō Hijikata.
